Huang Shanshou
Chinese, 1855 - 1919
Born to a poor family in Wujing, Jiangsu province, Huang passed the civil service examinations and served at the Qing court as Rice Prefect of Zhili prefecture (modern Hebei). Huang focused on historical figures in painting and frequently depicted scenes from stories in classical literature. His figure painting is executed with a technically difficult method due to his choice of refined lines and dense colors. In landscapes, he tended to apply colors derived from the traditional blue-green style. Along with varying bright tones, he applied delicate line work to define birds and flowers. He was also renowned for painting dragons in plain ink.
