BiographyLu Can was a native of Changzhou (Suzhou) and a painter of Loudong school (near Shanghai). His literary name was Xingshan. He was said to have studied Zhang Binju and Yun Shouping. He painted in the academic style and was noted for his figures, flowers and landscape. He was summoned to Beijing in 1779 and became a court painter. He painted the portrait of the Qianlong emperor and other officials in 1780, and he also did the portrait of the Sixth Panchen Lama. He died in Beijing. The six album leaves were painted in elaborate style in 1765 before he was summoned to Beijing in 1799..
