More Information
The resist-dye technique (in which certain areas are prevented from taking dye) was applied to the decoration along the skirt's hem. The central panel features a design of a butterfly hovering over a cymbidium (lan, a type of orchid), a flower symbolizing the wish "May you have plenty of grandchildren" (shouxian liansun). A border of butterflies among various stylized flowers completes the panel decoration and is repeated throughout the skirt's pleating.
