More Information
Rowing sculls, Japanese sailboats, and clouds decorate this long-sleeved woman’s jacket, which would have been worn over a kimono. In the late 1920s and 1930s, references to the modern leisure activities of the moneyed classes entered the visual language of paintings, prints, and textiles. The motifs on this jacket suggest that it would have been worn by a young woman, presumably one eager to show off her modernity and chic fashion sense. The designs appear to have been executed using a combination of paste-resist dyeing and hand painting.
