More Information
This painting depicts the same scene as does 2006.27.80.1, but the differences of style could hardly be greater. Instead of experimenting with a variety of Western pictorial effects and suggesting a landscape receding into deep space, the artist of this work follows the time-honored traditions of keeping the space shallow and emphasizing the clear, careful arrangement of silhouetted forms. The sky is not the atmospheric blending of white and pale blue with fluffy clouds of 2006.27.80.1 but a solid brilliant orange. The contrast suggests how greatly Thai painting of traditional themes was transformed between 1780 and 1880, and how successful the results were at various points in the process
