The situation in the village where Jujaka and his young wife live is complicated. Part of the reason that the other women dislike Jujaka's wife is that her obedience to her husband leads their husbands to expect the same from them. Their home lives are filled with quarrels, and they take out their resentment on Jujaka's wife by harassing her.

Here, in the house at right, Jujaka's wife indulges her husband, while in the other houses wives fight with, or are beaten by, their dissatisfied husbands. Below, the same two women (recognizable by the colors and patterns of their lower garments) who have been in conflict with their husbands now mock Jujaka's wife.
