BiographyGao Qipei was born to a military family of Manchu nobility; he served the Qing court, reaching the rank of vice minister at the Ministry of Justice. Regarded as one of the most talented artists of his time, Gao was unique in his ability to paint with his fingers. Evidence of that technique can be seen in this painting. His wide range of subjects, from landscapes to flowers and birds, attracted attention of professional and literati circles.
