More Information
This half mask with a beaklike nose represents the face of an imaginary creature that was half-human and half-crow, a kind of forest spirit (tengu). These creatures, believed to have exceptional ability with the sword, were admired by military men. The mask's interior is red lacquer. It is fitted with flanges down each cheek to protect the helmet cord (yadome).
