More Information
Chen Hongshou (1768-1822), a pseudonym for Man Sheng, a native of Zhejiang, was a renowned intellectual who excelled in literature, painting, calligraphy, and seal-carving. During his three-year service as magistrate of Yixing, he developed an enthusiasm for purple clay wares. With the cooperation of his colleagues, many teapots were made with the studio names "Amantuo-shi" on the base of the piece and "Peng Nian" beneath the handle, some not necessarily by Chen's own hand. This piece displays an artistic style that combined seal-carving with calligraphy on pots, his great contribution to yixing ware. An inscription on the body signed by Man Sheng reads: "At the farmer's house, the window open to the same mountain view."
