More Information
Metal, leather, and wood, the dominant materials of Liao nomadic craftsmen, offered resources for stylistic crossover in the treatment of Liao ceramic dishes and bowls. Polychrome glazed dishes in round, square, or oblong shapes on a flat base and with or without lobed lips were commonly mold-impressed with floral patterns (CGK Zenshu 1986 vol. 17: figs. 67-8). This saucer is impressed with a design of lotus sprays and water arrows. Three-color glazed lobed dishes, probably made at the shangjing kiln, were popular in the middle to late Liao.
