On View
Not on viewThis lacquered wooden table is composed of a round top mounted on a short conical pedestal. The surface is decorated with two phoenixes, while the sides of the pedestal are pierced with four circles containing a symbol of the Korean national flag (Taegeukgi); this exhibition includes a cabinet, on view against the wall, that has this same motif on the exterior and interior. The scrolling floral motif on the pedestal is thought to be of a peony or an earlier example of the Korean flower, rose of Sharon (mugunghwa).
Conservation of this work is made possible by the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation.
