How does the bold appearance of this work differ from earlier baskets?
Hayakawa Shokosai III, the fifth son of Shokosai I and younger brother of Shokosai II, became one of the leading artists of his day. Unlike his predecessors, who had worked primarily in the intricate, Chinese-influenced modes of basketry, Shokosai III developed an innovative "Japanese" style in which he incorporated naturally deformed pieces of bamboo culm and rhizome (underground runner) together with wide strips of loosely plaited bamboo. His vision and innovation made Shokosai III a major creative force in the field.
