More InformationHonda Syoryu made this bamboo sculpture with a single slender strip of dark brown-dyed bamboo. It is woven in twine plait that opens out into square plaiting on the ends. The piece is pulled and manipulated into itself to create an undulating sculpture. The dye in the upper center surface areas has been wiped to reveal a honey-colored bamboo. Honda was born in Kagoshima prefecture in Kyushu, and works in Beppu, Oita prefecture. He studied with the master Kadota Niko (1908–1994). Honda’s disciples include Kibe Seiho (b. 1951), Mimura Chikuho (b. 1973), and Nakatomi Hajime (b. 1974).
