More Information

This painting is from a set illustrating a ragamala, or garland of male and female musical modes (a raga and raginis). Konkani Ragini sits against a bolster on a gilded throne-like seat flanked by cranes. This particular musical mode is not often represented. Perhaps its tune suggests the call of a crane, and for this reason the artist included these birds to accompany Konkani's personification.

Paintings from Basohli such as this one present bold images against flat backgrounds.
