More Information

Europeans who lived in India developed a distinctive building type for their homes. Often these consisted of one tall story with wide verandas or porches to catch breezes and as alternate places to sleep in the hot season. A severe classical style was preferred, with columned porticos to add a stately quality. This was probably more to impress other Europeans than to impress the Indians themselves.

Called bungalows after an Indian word, these homes were often much grander than the small buildings that go by that name in the West.
