Ramlal eating opium
As time goes on and scholarship ferrets out new material, many centers of painting are identified. The small principality of Badnore is one such place. Artists from the main Mewar capital of Udaipur traveled to some of the smaller kingdoms under Mewari control and executed paintings, primarily portraits of its kings.
Although not identified, the king at the center toward the top may be Thakur Pratap Singh, and the younger man below him sitting on an elaborate carpet his successor, Kunvar Kesri Singh. Many other figures are depicted in a large group framed by elaborate vegetation. The inscription dates the painting, gives the name of the painter, and informs us Ramlal is being given opium. The full significance of this act is not known. Perhaps it is a manner of execution—a slow death by poison.
The "artist's name" Ramji may be a variant of the name for an artist— variously called Rama or Ramo in the literature—known to have worked at the Mewar capital of Udaipur and elsewhere. A painting of Pratap Singh and Kesri Singh by him has been published.
