Yu HeChinese, active 1340 - 1360

Yu He俞和 (sobriquet Zhong 中, nickname Zizhi 紫芝 active. 1340-60) of Tongjiang (Zhejiang province) was described by his contemporaries as a “scholar-hermit with no intention of serving in the bureaucracy.” With a passion for poetry and writing, he mastered calligraphy, studying the masterworks of the Tang and Song dynasties, and excelled in the style of Zhao Mengfu (1254–1322); Yu He’s copies of Zhao’s work were good enough to “fool the experts”. His running, cursive, and standard scripts have been widely admired and praised to the present day.
