In this painting just a few strokes serve to outline the two bottle gourds, the lush vines from which the gourds grow, a stake to support them, and a large rock. Washes of color and ink complete the composition. By the time Zhu painted this work, he had been an active artist for more than eighty years; he was a master of ink painting and had a background in oil painting as well.
The inscription reads:
Late winter of the renxu year [1982], Qizhan.
