More Information

The subject of a lotus pond in late autumn was the artist’s professed favorite theme. In this painting, Chao Shao-An renders the withered and decaying lotus leaves with care, employing many of the Western elements associated with the Lingnan school style: subtle gradations of color, an emphasis on volume, and the hint of the large leaf’s reflection in the pond. The text on the painting reads:

Yiwei year (1955), autumn, ninth month.
