More Information
This circular box represents a type of lacquerware made in huge numbers during the Ming dynasty. Small boxes like this one were used to hold red paste, for stamping one’s name on a document, or cosmetics. Its exterior is carved with a motif of lychees, a popular fruit symbolizing fertility.
