More Information
In contrast to a previous globular-shaped ewer (cat. no. 142), the thinner and elongated proportions of this vessel with its two-bar handle was an alternate version produced by the northern kilns, particularly at the yaozhou kiln in Shaanxi (Shaanxi Inst. Arch. 1965: pl. VIII.1, 2), and mixian kiln in Henan (WW 1964.2: 56). More often found in white- and green-glazed work, this example is among the scarce Tang black globular ewers that became the prototype for ewers during the Song dynasty.
