For centuries, ceramics from China (and also Vietnam and Thailand) were imported into Indonesia in huge quantities. The finest of these were treasured and treated as heirlooms. This tiny sixteenth-century Chinese porcelain bowl has had overlaid on its lid an elaborate Indonesian gold decoration.
