More Information

Koo Haeja was named a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 89 in needlework, an honor that South Korea bestows on traditional artisanal practices such as music, dance, drama, folk games, rites, martial arts, handicrafts, and cuisine; their holders are known as National Living Treasures. Koo learned traditional sewing techniques from her mother-in-law, who was the first seamstress whose work was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Heritage. While keeping the traditional techniques of bojagi-making, Koo employs a modern, abstract design in her works.

On the right bojagi, a small knob in the center to lift this cloth indicates that it was made to cover a large serving table or tray. The three bats on the knob symbolize good luck.
