More Information

Javanese shadow puppets come in many forms including puppets with animal faces and human-like bodies. This boar-faced puppet wears a sarong, sashes, and jewelry. He may have been used in a well-known story of the hero Arjuna from the Mahabharata epic.

In the story, a demi-god takes the form of a boar to disturb the meditating hero Arjuna. Arjuna and the god Shiva shoot the boar at the same time. After a brief conflict, Shiva grants Arjuna a powerful weapon.
