More Information

Three woven panels are hand-sewn together to form this kira, or Bhutanese woman's garment. It is worn wrapped around the body, belted at the waist, and hooked with silver ornaments at the shoulders. The stripes run horizontally on women's costumes, and vertically on men's robes; the design of the textile also varies from valley to valley.

The predominant colors on this kira are a golden yellow and red. Rainbow stripes appear on the edges. Among the red sections ar bold geometric designs in yellow, woven using the supplementary weft technique—a style of production that uses an extra set of threads woven into the regular weft threads to create dramatic geometric patterns such as those seen here.
