More Information

三代早川尚古斎作「提梁大明壺皮組花籃」

Shokosai III was a man of many talents, accomplished in music, ink painting, and calligraphy, as well as in basketry.

On the silk storage bag for this impressive basket, he showcases his skill with the brush through literati-style ink paintings and Chinese phrases meaning "wishes granted" and "immortality."

According to Shokosai V, this basket and its accessories are especially significant because the silk pouches were custom-made by the family of Shokosai III's wife who had a pouch making business.
