More Information
According to the artist's inscription, this is a copy of a Chinese basket. In the 1800s and early 1900s, bamboo artists based in the cities of Sakai and Osaka (both Osaka prefecture) were known for their skill at making intricate baskets modeled after Chinese prototypes. This is a rare work by Tanabe Chikuhosai, the eldest brother of Tanabe Chikuunsai I.
