More Information

Mount Oyama is shown in the midst of a downpour. Steep stone stairways lead from a Buddhist temple to a Shinto shrine. A few hardy pilgrims have already ascended to a point above the rooftop of the temple gate. Farther up, a few others, led by a man carrying a symbolic wooden sword, climb toward the lower shrine. The distance they still have to traverse is measured by the main shrine buildings high above them, just visible at the top of the mountain.

A popular pilgrimage site throughout the Edo period, Mount Oyama was thronged with religious devotees during the three-month period each year when climbing to the peak was permitted. At the left is the familiar conical peak of Mt. Fuji, shrouded in mist. This is one of eight prints by Toyoshige depicting famous places in Kanagawa prefecture.
