More Information

Pausing momentarily to pose for the camera, the two men seen here sit on a onehorse carriage known as an ekka. The man in white stares directly into the camera; behind him, low structures dot the field on which the ekka stands. It is the vehicle that claims the photographer's attention—the two men seem incidental. They serve as props to demonstrate how the curious vehicle functions, as is reinforced by the photograph's inscription—which reads only "An Ekka."

The word ekka is etymologically linked to the Hindi term ek, meaning "one," in reference to the carriage having only one horse. Ekka was also spelled/pronounced ekhee or acre, but only by the British.
