More InformationChughtai's female subjects included various idealized Muslim women, from historical and literary figures to everyday villagers and modern Pakistanis. In this image Chughtai's subject is dressed in a traditional outfit consisting of a long upper garment worn over gathered trousers. Her head is covered by a veil. As if to emphasize this image of Muslim female propriety, a Koran stand appears at the left edge of the painting.
