A standing woman adjusting her veil

Chughtai's female subjects included various idealized Muslim women, from historical and literary figures to everyday villagers and modern Pakistanis. In this image Chughtai's subject is dressed in a traditional outfit consisting of a long upper garment worn over gathered trousers. Her head is covered by a veil. As if to emphasize this image of Muslim female propriety, a Koran stand appears at the left edge of the painting.
