More Information
Senju Hiroshi, a native of Tokyo, has been active in the New York contemporary art scene since 1995. He is primarily a painter of waterfalls and deserts, which he views as symbols of life and death. Here, Senju focuses on the moment when the rushing water enters the body of water below, a transition between motion and stillness. Despite the painting’s simple appearance, the methods employed to create it were time-consuming. By dripping paint, Senju built up many layers of glowing metallic white against a rich, dark background, evoking the paradoxical double sensation of timelessness and perpetual change. In selecting an extremely wide format, the artist brings the waterfall into the foreground, creating another visual trick: the viewer can almost hear the roar of the water and see the mist rising from the surface of the pool below.
