Au Ho-nien was born in Guangdong in 1935 and began to study painting with Chao Shao-an at the age of seventeen. Au is considered one of the leading living masters of the Lingnan school. Former chairman of the Fine Art Department of the Chinese Culture University in Taiwan and a member on the Review Board of the National Art Exhibitions, he was awarded the prestigious Gold Cup Prize by the Chinese Painting Association in Taiwan. The inscription by the artist reads: After exerting its wings for a thousand miles, the eagle sits at rest; painted for Ms. Shirley Lovely for her pure enjoyment.
