More Information
An X-radiograph of this vase shows that the head is actually made from a bird figure's body minus its original head. A cylinder was added to the bird's neck to form the upper spout. There are many other unrelated fragments around the animal's neck, lower forelegs, and rump. While the body is substantially complete, there is no way of knowing what the head of this animal figure originally looked like, and there is no reason to believe that it looked the way it does now.
