More Information
Buncheong ware was once thought to have been used mainly by commoners. However, stamped vessels such as this reveal that buncheong ware was produced for all social classes. This bowl is stamped with the mark of the Bureau of the Royal Kitchen, Naeseom. The rising demand for buncheong at the royal, state, and individual levels created a shortage that led to problems including the theft of vessels from government bureaus. To address the problem and identify stolen vessels, the wares were inscribed and stamped with the name of each bureau that owned them.
