More Information

These fittings decorated a sort of portable hammock in which nobles were carried from place to place by bearers. The hooks and rings were attached to a pole, and the hammock was hung from them. The central fitting had no function other than ornament.

The hooks are decorated with figures locked in intense combat. One figure holds a short weapon in one hand and grasps another figure’s hair with the other. Above them is a figure with hands in a gesture of worship, flanked by a pair of elephants. This is topped by ornate abstract foliage and cloud-like motifs, in a style suggesting Chinese influence. The outer tip of each hook is adorned with an elaborate serpent head.

The central fitting is decorated with similarly ornate cloud-like motifs. A female mythical figure holds a round symbolic implement, possibly a mirror, in each hand.
