Woman's garment in checkered pattern

This eastern Bhutanese pattern of red and black checks on a white background is known as pangtsi; it was adapted from textile patterns of nearby Assam, India. In Bhutan pangtsi was originally woven in raw silk. Used primarily for Bhutanese men's dress (go), this pattern fell out of fashion in the 1970s only to make a strong comeback in the late 1980s in both women's and men's clothing.

Nine lengths, woven on a narrow loom, were pieced together to make this garment.
