More Information

Material and Style: Like much of the sculpture of central and western India, this sculpture is of sandstone. These sandstones range in color from cream to tan to red. (Other sculpture from central and western India is displayed in Gallery 3.)

Unlike the stone of the northern and southern Indian Vishnus to either side of this one, sandstone usually cannot be carved with extremely fine detail.

Identifying Symbols: In this sculpture, next to Vishnu’s legs are figures holding a conch shell and a war discus. They are personifications of these objects, which, together with a club, Vishnu characteristically holds. (The war discus that this figure of Vishnu once held has broken off.)
