More Information

Hiroshige II, first known as Shigenobu, was one of the most talented students of Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858). In 1859, Shigenobu married his teacher's daughter and assumed the name Hiroshige II. For unknown reasons, his marriage was dissolved in 1865. He then lived in Yokohama and once again used the name Shigenobu.

Hiroshige II was obviously inspired by his teacher's popular series Pictures of Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces. To depict the driving rain, Hiroshige II, like his teacher, covers the entire scene with sweeping diagonal lines. (See Hiroshige's The Yamabushi Gorge in Mimasaka Province to your left.)
