Birds and flowers

Baiitsu specialized in bird and flower subjects, using sketchbooks to record his favorite motifs and compositions. This screen painting represents autumn and winter plants such as camellias, a plum tree, daffodils, chrysanthemums, and brush clover; and cranes and small birds associated with the fall and winter season. The well-preserved colors—various shades of green, red, and yellow—give the painting a decorative splendor. With its flowers and birds of fall and winter, this screen was originally paired with a screen of spring and summer, which depicted pheasants under a willow tree and profusely growing thickets. The two screens were separated at an auction in 1933. The present location of the pheasant screen is unknown.
